The best group study spots in Back Bay are the Boston Public Library's bookable spaces at Copley, plus a few cafes for the part of the session when you talk out loud. Book the library first if you want a set two hours, and move to Trident Booksellers & Cafe when it closes. You have a midterm coming, classmates on two T lines, and no table big enough at the first cafe you try.

This post, part of our Back Bay guide, lists seven places, explains library bookings by head count, and matches each pick to its T stop. For downtown picks, see study group meeting place ideas in Boston.

Which group study spots in Back Bay fit your group?

Choose by head count and how long you need the space. Book a room for a long block of work, and walk in to a cafe for a shorter review.

Our picks in Back Bay

Chosen by the Where2Meet team. Photos, ratings and addresses load live from Google Maps.

  • Boston Public Library

Book a space here when the group wants a set two hours of work, because alcoves hold up to 6 and the mezzanine study rooms hold 7 to 20. It has Wi-Fi and stays open to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday. Copley is about a 1-minute walk.

  • Newsfeed Café

Eat between sessions at this inexpensive cafe inside the Central Library, since the library's booked spaces don't allow food. It suits groups and closes at 5 p.m. every day, and it opens at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Copley is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Workbar Back Bay

Rent a meeting room at this coworking office when your group will pay for a booked weekday slot. Non-members can book online, and the space lists whiteboards and Wi-Fi. It's on the sixth floor, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, about a 1-minute walk from Arlington.

  • Trident Booksellers & Cafe

After the library closes, move your group to this inexpensive bookstore cafe on Newbury Street, open to 10 p.m. every day. Book ahead, because it takes reservations and suits groups. Hynes is about a 2-minute walk, and that station has no elevators.

  • Tatte Bakery & Cafe | Copley Square

Orange Line and commuter rail riders reach this inexpensive cafe in about 4 minutes from Back Bay station. It suits groups but doesn't take reservations, so send someone ahead to find seats. It's open to 8 p.m., or 7 p.m. on Sunday.

  • Life Alive Organic Cafe Back Bay

Keep going through dinner at this inexpensive restaurant on Boylston Street, which suits groups and stays open to 9 p.m. every day. It takes no reservations, so come early to sit together. Arlington is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Capital One Café

Plug in here, since this inexpensive coffee shop across Boylston Street from the library offers free Wi-Fi and outlets. Tables are walk-in only. It closes at 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 12:30 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on weekends, about a 3-minute walk from Copley.

Google Maps

The hours, price levels, reservations, group details and walk times on these cards come from Google Maps as of November 2026. The library's spaces and Wi-Fi come from its meeting spaces and Central Library pages, Workbar's details from its Back Bay page, and Capital One's Wi-Fi and outlets from its Back Bay page.

Ask the other places about Wi-Fi before you plan around laptops.

How do you book a study room at the Boston Public Library?

Pick the space by head count, because the library splits its bookings at six people. Neither booking page lists a fee, so confirm the cost when you apply.

  1. Up to 6 people. Book a KBLIC alcove in the Kirstein Business Library, on the lower level. Each group gets 2 hours a day and 3 sessions a week. Check in at the Info Desk when you arrive.
  2. 7 to 20 people. Apply for a mezzanine study room at least 2 business days ahead and no more than 30 days out. You get 2 hours and one booking a week. The room isn't yours until the library's Special Events Department approves the request.
  3. Meet in person. Study rooms have no video conferencing and aren't meant for virtual meetings.
  4. Bring only covered drinks. Food isn't allowed in the library, so eat at Newsfeed Café first.

The library's community rooms are for nonprofits holding free public meetings, so skip that form.

Which T stop should each person use?

Copley is closest to the library and Capital One Café, and Arlington is closest to Workbar and Life Alive. Trident is about 12 minutes on foot from Copley but 2 from Hynes.

  • Green Line B, C and D riders. All three stop at Arlington, Copley and Hynes.
  • Green Line E riders. The E skips Hynes. Prudential is about a 10-minute walk from Trident.
  • Orange Line and commuter rail riders. Back Bay station is about a 4-minute walk from the library, but about 17 minutes from Trident, so favor the Copley picks.
  • Classmates who need an elevator. Hynes has no elevators. Prudential, Copley, Arlington and Back Bay all have step-free access.

From November 7 to 15, 2026, the MBTA's Green Line alerts list no trains through Arlington, Copley or Hynes. Riders take shuttle buses to Copley and Back Bay, or the Orange Line from North Station to Back Bay. That week, start from a pick near Back Bay station.

How to do it in Where2Meet

Start at least three days before the session, since a study room needs 2 business days' notice. Classmates add the T stop they'll ride from in a shared Where2Meet link, then compare transit times to the library and Trident. After the vote, the organizer picks the spot and files the booking.
