The best book club meeting place in Back Bay is a table you can reserve, in a room that stays open past your last question. Trident Booksellers & Cafe on Newbury Street fits most evening clubs, and the two tea rooms inside the Boston Public Library suit daytime ones. You have a date and a title, members are coming from different T lines, and you need somewhere eight people can talk for two hours.

This post, part of our Back Bay guide, lists seven places, then matches them to the times clubs meet and the T stops members use. For picks in Beacon Hill, the Seaport and Charlestown, see where to host a book club in Boston.

Which book club meeting place in Back Bay fits your club?

Start with your head count and whether you want a meal. Once your club reaches six, choose a place that takes reservations, so nobody spends the first half hour hunting for chairs.

Our picks in Back Bay

Chosen by the Where2Meet team. Photos, ratings and addresses load live from Google Maps.

  • Trident Booksellers & Cafe

Reserve here first if your club meets on a weeknight, since this inexpensive bookstore cafe takes bookings, suits groups and stays open to 10 p.m. every day. Hynes is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Map Room Lounge

Daytime clubs can reserve a table at this moderately priced lounge inside the Central Library. It's closed Monday and shuts at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, but stays open to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Copley is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Courtyard Tea Room

Book this tea room for a weekend meeting, when it's open to 4:45 p.m. It takes reservations, and its caterer handles large groups and private events by request. Copley is about a 2-minute walk, and Back Bay station about 5.

  • Thinking Cup

Keep this coffee shop for a club of three or four, because it doesn't take reservations and you can't hold a table. It's inexpensive and open to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 p.m. Friday to Sunday, about a 5-minute walk from Copley.

  • Piattini

Order dinner and wine during the discussion at this Italian restaurant on Newbury Street, which takes reservations and suits groups. It's moderately priced and closes at 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 p.m. on Sunday. Copley is about a 6-minute walk.

  • Back Bay Social

Stay past the last chapter at this moderately priced Boylston Street restaurant, which takes reservations, suits groups and stays open to 2 a.m. every day. Ask for a table away from the bar when you book. Hynes is about a 6-minute walk, and Copley about 7.

  • The College Club of Boston

Try this Commonwealth Avenue club for an annual dinner or an author visit, since its rooms seat 60 for a meal. Its events page doesn't say whether a member must book, so call the office first. Arlington is about a 5-minute walk.

Google Maps

The hours, price levels, reservations and walk times on these cards come from Google Maps as of November 2026. The College Club's seat count comes from its events page, and the Courtyard Tea Room's group booking comes from its caterer's Library Tea page.

Which picks work for the day your club meets?

Match your usual start time to the closing time before you send the date. Three picks suit a 7 p.m. start from Monday to Thursday, and the library's tea rooms suit earlier meetings.

  • Weeknights at 7 p.m. Trident, Piattini and Back Bay Social all stay open at least two and a half hours after that. Trident runs its own book clubs from 7 to 9 p.m. on some weeknights, so mention yours when you book.
  • Wednesday or Thursday after work. Both tea rooms stay open to 7 p.m., so a 5 p.m. start gets you two hours.
  • Weekend afternoons. Both tea rooms close at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, so start by 2:30 p.m.
  • Friday night. Thinking Cup stays open to 9 p.m., which gives a club of three or four a coffee shop option after work.

Which T stop should members aim for?

Send each member to the stop that matches the pick, because the Green Line branches split west of Copley. Copley has all four branches and is the closest stop to the library, Thinking Cup and Piattini.

  • B, C and D riders. Stay on to Hynes for Trident and Back Bay Social.
  • E riders. Get off at Copley, since the E doesn't stop at Hynes.
  • Orange Line and commuter rail riders. Back Bay station is about a 5-minute walk from the library, but about 17 minutes from Trident. Those members may prefer a pick on Copley Square.
  • Members who need an elevator. Hynes has no elevators. Prudential, on the E branch, has step-free access and is about a 10-minute walk from Trident.

A club that stays late at Back Bay Social should check the MBTA's subway guide for the last connections.

How to do it in Where2Meet

Whoever picked next month's title shares a Where2Meet link with the club, and each reader adds the T stop they ride from, with no account needed. Compare transit times to Trident and the Map Room, because Orange Line riders end up closer to one and B, C and D riders to the other. Members vote, then the organizer picks the spot and books the table.

Common questions

Can a book club book a private room in Back Bay?

Yes. Trident's The Stacks is 1,350 square feet of event space among the second-floor bookshelves, booked through an inquiry form. Its page doesn't list a minimum spend, so ask before you commit.

Can a book club reserve a free room at the Boston Public Library?

Usually not. The library's community rooms are for nonprofits holding meetings that are free and open to the public. A private club can meet at either tea room in the building instead.

Where can a book club meet on a Monday in Back Bay?

Skip the library, because both tea rooms are closed on Monday. Trident, Thinking Cup, Piattini and Back Bay Social are all open.
