If you're working out where to host a book club in Boston, start with a bookstore cafe or a library within a short walk of the T. Both kinds of place keep the night about the book, and most of the picks below are 5 minutes or less from a station. Your club has outgrown someone's living room, members might live anywhere from Somerville to Dorchester, and you need a table where people can hear each other talk.

This post lists seven places, then covers what the public library allows, how late each place stays open, and which stations work for a spread-out club. It's part of our guide to Boston.

Which book club meeting place in Boston suits your group?

Pick by the day and hour your club meets. Weekend afternoon clubs fit the two libraries and their cafe, and weeknight clubs fit the bookstore cafes and the bar.

Our picks in Boston

Chosen by the Where2Meet team. Photos, ratings and addresses load live from Google Maps.

  • Trident Booksellers & Cafe

Reserve a table here when the club wants a full meal with the discussion, since this inexpensive bookstore cafe takes bookings and suits groups. It's open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, about a 2-minute walk from Hynes Convention Center on the Green Line.

  • Boston Public Library

Members who want to borrow next month's title can start at the Central Library, about a 1-minute walk from Copley on every Green Line branch. It's open to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

  • Map Room Lounge

Inside the Central Library, this moderately priced cafe takes reservations, so a daytime club can hold a table. Check the day first, because it's closed Monday and shuts at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Copley station is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Beacon Hill Books & Cafe

Clubs with readers on the Red Line can walk about 5 minutes from Charles/MGH to this bookstore with a cafe. It stays open to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and closes at 7 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.

  • Boston Athenaeum

Buy tickets to one of this library's author talks when the club wants an outing instead of a table. Non-members can pay for first-floor admission. It's closed Sunday and open to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, about a 5-minute walk from Park Street.

  • Porter Square Books: Boston Edition

Seaport readers can meet at this bookstore, which shares its building with the GrubStreet writing center and holds author events. It's open every day until 7 p.m., about a 5-minute walk from Courthouse on the Silver Line.

  • Urban Wild Boston

For an evening club that wants drinks after the last chapter, this Charlestown bar takes reservations and suits groups. It's expensive and closed Monday, but open to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Community College on the Orange Line is about a 15-minute walk.

Google Maps

Hours, price levels, reservations and group details on these cards come from Google Maps as of November 2026. Walk times are Google Maps walking directions from each MBTA station the note names.

Can a book club meet at the Boston Public Library?

Yes, at a cafe table, but a private club usually can't book a free room. The library offers its community rooms free only to nonprofits holding meetings that are free and open to the public, as its reservable spaces page says.

So most clubs meet at the Map Room Lounge inside the building and reserve ahead. If your club is open to anyone and run by a nonprofit, apply for a community room instead.

How late can a weeknight book club stay?

Check the closing time before you send the date, because closing times run from mid-afternoon to 1 a.m.

  • Until 10 p.m. Trident is open to 10 p.m. every night, which gives a 7 p.m. club three hours.
  • Until 9 p.m. Beacon Hill Books stays open to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, but closes at 7 p.m. on Monday.
  • Until 7 or 8 p.m. Porter Square Books closes at 7 p.m. The library and the Athenaeum close at 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and at 5 p.m. on Friday.
  • Later. Urban Wild is the one pick open past midnight, on Friday and Saturday.

What if the club wants an outing instead of a discussion table?

Go to an author talk once or twice a year. The Athenaeum sells tickets for its weekly programs to visitors, and first-floor admission is $11 for visitors 14 and up, as its visit page lists.

Porter Square Books in the Seaport also holds author events. Read the visiting author's book that month, then go out for food afterward.

Which stations work for a spread-out club?

Choose a place on the line most members already ride. Copley and Hynes are on the Green Line, Charles/MGH is on the Red Line, and Park Street has both.

The Seaport has no subway station, so Porter Square Books is easiest for members who come through South Station and take the Silver Line one stop to Courthouse. The MBTA's subway guide lists when trains stop each night.

How to do it in Where2Meet

The member who keeps the reading list posts one Where2Meet link in the club's group chat, and nobody needs an account to open it. Each reader adds the T stop nearest home, such as Davis, JFK/UMass or Ruggles, and the map compares transit times to Trident, Beacon Hill Books and the Map Room. Members vote on the venue for next month's book, and the host makes the final pick.

Common questions

Can you reserve a table for a book club at Trident?

Yes. Trident takes reservations and suits groups, so book a table for your head count before you share the date.

Is the Boston Athenaeum open to non-members?

Yes. Visitors can buy first-floor admission, and tickets to its talks are sold to the public. It's closed on Sunday.

Where can a book club meet on a Sunday in Boston?

Trident, Beacon Hill Books, Porter Square Books, the Central Library, the Map Room and Urban Wild all open on Sunday. The Athenaeum is the one pick that's closed.
