Where to study with friends in New York comes down to a table that fits the group and a cafe that welcomes laptops. The seven Manhattan cafes below are good for working on a laptop, and each is a short walk from the subway. Your study group lives in three boroughs, finals are coming, and nobody agrees on whose side of the city to meet on.

This post suggests seven cafes from the Lower East Side to Murray Hill. Then it covers how long a group can stay, what to check before you go, and where to study late. It is part of our guide to New York.

Where to study with friends in Manhattan?

Pick a cafe that's good for laptops and on a line most of the group rides. These seven sit in four areas, each near a big station.

  • Black Cat LES

Late sessions fit this cafe on Rivington Street, which stays open until 11 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. It's good for groups and for working on a laptop, and it's quiet, but its Wi-Fi is paid. The Delancey St-Essex St station is about a 6-minute walk.

  • Pause Cafe

Start early at this quiet cafe on Clinton Street, open from 7 a.m. every day until 8 p.m., or 7 p.m. on Sundays. It has free Wi-Fi and is good for working on a laptop. Walk about 8 minutes from the Delancey St-Essex St station.

  • Ariston Coffee Bar

Groups coming from many directions can use this cafe on Fifth Avenue near 13th Street, about a 6-minute walk from 14 St-Union Sq. It's good for groups and laptops, has free Wi-Fi, and closes at 7 p.m. most days and 6 p.m. on Sundays.

  • Moshava Coffee

Keep this quiet cafe on West 8th Street for a weekday session, because it closes on weekends and at 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday. It's good for working on a laptop and has Wi-Fi. The W 4 St-Wash Sq station is about a 4-minute walk.

  • Café-Flor / Bar 21

Book a table here for an evening review, since this cafe and bar on Eighth Avenue takes reservations and stays open until 10 p.m., or 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It's good for working on a laptop and has Wi-Fi. It's about a 3-minute walk from the 23 St station on the C and E.

  • Coffee Project New York

Morning study groups on the 1 can walk about a minute from the 18 St station to this cafe on Seventh Avenue. It opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays, has free Wi-Fi and is good for working on a laptop, but it closes at 5:30 p.m.

  • Charlotte Cafe

East Side groups can settle in at this quiet cafe on Second Avenue, which is good for groups and laptops and opens at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays. It lists no Wi-Fi, so download readings first. The 33 St station on the 6 is about an 8-minute walk.

Google Maps

The hours, Wi-Fi, laptop and group details and the walk times on these cards come from Google Maps as of October 2026.

The Union Square and Greenwich Village picks reach the most people. The 14 St-Union Sq station has eight lines, and W 4 St-Wash Sq has seven.

The Lower East Side picks suit students on the F, J, M and Z. The Chelsea picks suit the 1, C and E, and Charlotte Cafe suits the 6 on the East Side.

How long can a study group stay at a cafe?

Plan on a few hours, and buy something as you go. A cafe has to turn tables, so a group that orders once and stays all day takes seats from paying customers.

Order a drink each when you sit down and food around mealtimes. Split one long session into two blocks with a break, and order again after the break. If the cafe fills up, give up the extra chairs.

Check the closing time before you start. Coffee Project closes at 5:30 p.m. and Moshava closes on weekends, so a late afternoon session there runs short.

What should the group check before going?

Check four things the night before: Wi-Fi, power, seating and noise. A plan that misses one of them can end the session early.

  • Wi-Fi. Not every pick has free Wi-Fi. Download readings and slides before you leave home.
  • Power. Outlets aren't listed for any of these cafes. Charge laptops fully and bring a power bank.
  • Seating. Three of the picks are good for groups. For six or more, split across two tables or arrive at opening time.
  • Noise. Four of the picks are listed as quiet. Pick a livelier one if the group plans to talk through problem sets out loud.

Where can you study with friends late at night?

Black Cat LES and Café-Flor / Bar 21 stay open the latest. Both are open until 11 p.m. on some nights.

Check the train home before you settle in. Late at night, the F and J still stop at Delancey St-Essex St, and the A and E stop at 23 St, but the C doesn't run. The MTA's late-night subway map shows every line that runs overnight.

How to do it in Where2Meet

Where2Meet lets the study group choose the cafe together from one shared link.

  1. Open Where2Meet, type Study session in the first box, and set the day and the time.
  2. Send the link to the group chat. Nobody needs an account.
  3. Each person adds where they're coming from. A cross street, a station or a neighborhood is enough.
  4. Search for cafes around the group, or look one up by name. Compare each person's travel time by transit, walking, car or bike, and see the routes on the map.
  5. Vote on the cafes you like. The organizer picks the final spot, and everyone sees it without a refresh.
