The best study group meeting place in Boston is usually the Central Library at Copley or a cafe a few minutes from a downtown T station. Choose the library when the group needs to work quietly, and a cafe when you need to talk problems through. Your study group has people in Cambridge, Roxbury and Allston, an exam on Thursday, and no room on campus that everyone can reach.

This post lists seven picks near the T. Then it covers how to mix quiet work with talking, how late each place stays open, and which stations suit which riders. It's part of our guide to Boston.

Which study group meeting place in Boston fits your group?

Decide how much your group will talk. Silent reading fits the library, and working through problem sets out loud fits a cafe.

Our picks in Boston

Chosen by the Where2Meet team. Photos, ratings and addresses load live from Google Maps.

  • Boston Public Library

Pick the Central Library when everyone needs to read or write on their own, side by side at the long tables of Bates Hall. It's free, has Wi-Fi, and stays open to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Copley station is about a 1-minute walk.

  • Newsfeed Café

Inside the Central Library, this inexpensive cafe takes reservations and suits groups, so book a table for the part of the session where you talk. It's open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 11 a.m. on Sunday.

  • Capital One Café

Bring laptops to this inexpensive coffee shop across Boylston Street from the library, which offers free Wi-Fi. It's walk-in only and closes at 7 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on weekends, about a 2-minute walk from Copley.

  • Trident Booksellers & Cafe

Evening sessions fit this inexpensive bookstore cafe on Newbury Street, open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. It takes reservations and suits groups, so book a table if you'll eat while you work. Hynes Convention Center station is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Caffè Nero

Orange Line riders can walk about 2 minutes from Chinatown station, or 3 from Downtown Crossing, to this inexpensive coffee shop that suits groups. It's walk-in only and open until 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 8 p.m. on Sunday.

  • BON! Specialty Coffee

Students coming in on the Red or Green Line can walk about 4 minutes from Park Street to this inexpensive coffee shop on Beacon Street. It doesn't take reservations, so come early to get seats together. It's open until 8 p.m. every day.

  • Ogawa Coffee

Keep this inexpensive coffee shop for a short morning review, about a 1-minute walk from State station on the Orange and Blue lines. It's closed Monday and closes at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 4:30 p.m. on weekends.

Google Maps

Hours, price levels, reservations, group details and Wi-Fi on these cards come from Google Maps as of November 2026, except the library's Wi-Fi, which its Central Library page lists. Walk times are Google Maps walking directions from the station each note names.

Three picks are on Boylston Street at Copley, in Back Bay. Copley station has every Green Line branch, so Green Line riders get there without a transfer.

How do you mix quiet study and group discussion?

Split the session between two places on the same block. Work alone in the reading room, then move to a cafe table to compare answers.

At Copley, that means an hour or two in Bates Hall, then Newsfeed Café or Capital One Café when you need to talk. Agree on the switch time before you start, so nobody sits waiting.

A private study group usually can't book one of the library's free community rooms. Its reservable spaces page gives them to nonprofits holding free meetings open to the public.

How late can a study group stay?

Trident stays open the latest, until 10 p.m. every night. For a session after dinner, start there or at Caffè Nero.

  • Until 10 p.m. Trident, every day.
  • Until 9 p.m. Caffè Nero, Monday to Saturday. It closes at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Until 8 p.m. BON! every day, and the library Monday to Thursday. The library closes at 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday.
  • Earlier. Capital One Café closes at 7 p.m. on weekdays, Newsfeed Café at 5 p.m. and Ogawa Coffee at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, the library opens at 11 a.m., so plan a morning session at a cafe. The MBTA's subway guide lists when the last trains leave.

Which T stations work for students across Boston?

Match the place to the line most of the group rides. Copley and Hynes are on the Green Line, and Park Street adds the Red Line.

Students from Cambridge on the Red Line can get off at Park Street for BON!, or at Downtown Crossing for Caffè Nero. Orange Line riders can get off at Chinatown for Caffè Nero or at State for Ogawa Coffee. Green Line riders reach Copley and Hynes without a transfer, though the E branch doesn't stop at Hynes.

How to do it in Where2Meet

Whoever is organizing before the exam opens a Where2Meet plan and drops the link in the class chat. Classmates add the stop they ride from, such as Harvard, Ruggles or Packard's Corner, then check transit times to Bates Hall, Caffè Nero and BON! side by side. After a vote on the shortlist, the organizer locks in the spot and the time.
