The best holiday party venue in Boston for most groups is a place that books tables for a crowd and sits a short walk from a T station. For an office party, that often means the Seaport, where three game bars and a dinner spot sit within a 10-minute walk of Courthouse station. You have a head count, a budget and a date in December, and half the guests leave from a desk downtown while the rest come in from Cambridge or the South Shore.

This post lists eight places, then covers games versus dinner, when to book, and how guests get there and home. It's part of our guide to Boston.

Which holiday party venue in Boston suits your group?

Pick the area first, then the format. Four picks cluster in the Seaport, two are downtown, and two serve guests who live in Charlestown or South Boston.

Our picks in Boston

Chosen by the Where2Meet team. Photos, ratings and addresses load live from Google Maps.

  • Flight Club Boston

Book this darts bar when the team wants a game that everyone can play, not just a long dinner. It takes reservations for groups, is moderately priced and stays open to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Courthouse on the Silver Line is about a 1-minute walk.

  • Kings Dining & Entertainment

Bowling and a full menu under one roof make this a strong pick for an office party with a mixed crowd. Reserve ahead, since it's moderately priced and good for groups. It opens at 3 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and earlier later in the week.

  • SPIN Boston

Ping-pong tables give a big team something to do between rounds of drinks. Plan around its days off, because it's closed Sunday and Monday and opens at 4 p.m. on weekdays. South Station on the Red Line is about an 8-minute walk.

  • Empire

For a sit-down dinner near the Seaport game bars, this restaurant takes reservations and suits groups. It opens at 5 p.m. every day and stays open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Courthouse station is about a 2-minute walk.

  • Central Wharf Co.

Downtown teams near the Financial District can walk to this moderately priced restaurant after work. It takes reservations and suits groups, but it's closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Aquarium on the Blue Line is about a 3-minute walk.

  • Carrie Nation Cocktail Club

Pick this cocktail bar on Beacon Street when the party starts at lunch, since it opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and runs to 2 a.m. It's moderately priced and takes group bookings. Park Street, on the Red and Green lines, is about a 5-minute walk.

  • Prima Boston

Save this Italian restaurant in Charlestown for a splurge dinner, as it's expensive. It takes reservations, suits groups and opens at 10 a.m. on weekends for a daytime party. Community College on the Orange Line is about a 12-minute walk.

  • Capo Restaurant & Supper Club

Friends who live in South Boston can host the party close to home at this moderately priced Italian restaurant. It takes reservations, suits groups and opens at noon on weekends. Broadway on the Red Line is about a 16-minute walk.

Should an office holiday party venue have games or just dinner?

Choose games when coworkers don't all know each other. Choose dinner when the group is small enough to talk across one table.

A game gives people from different teams something to do together in the first hour. Flight Club and Kings are both at 60 Seaport Boulevard, so a group can book one and move to the other if the night runs long. SPIN is in Fort Point, about a 10-minute walk from Courthouse.

For a dinner, ask each restaurant whether it has a private room and what the minimum spend is. If the group is bigger than ten, see our tips on a restaurant for a big group in Boston.

When should you book a December party?

Book in October or early November. Other teams want the same December Fridays, so hold a Wednesday or Thursday if your date can move.

Check closing days before you pick a date. Central Wharf Co. is closed Sunday to Tuesday, and SPIN is closed Sunday and Monday. A Thursday works at all eight picks.

A lunch party avoids the evening rush. Carrie Nation opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays, and Flight Club opens at noon.

How do guests get there and home?

Start from the station most guests pass through. For the Seaport picks, that is South Station.

  • To the Seaport. The Seaport has no subway station. Take the Red Line to South Station, then any Silver Line SL1, SL2 or SL3 bus one stop to Courthouse.
  • To downtown. Central Wharf Co. is near Aquarium on the Blue Line. Carrie Nation is near Park Street on the Red and Green lines.
  • To Charlestown and South Boston. Prima is a walk from the Orange Line, and Capo is a walk from the Red Line at Broadway.

Plan the trip home before the last toast. The MBTA's subway guide says to reach a downtown transfer station by 12:35 a.m. Sunday to Thursday, or by 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

How to do it in Where2Meet

Whoever plans the party sends one Where2Meet link in the team channel, and coworkers open it without signing up. Each person adds the station they leave from after work, such as South Station, Kendall or Quincy Center. Put the Seaport game bars next to Central Wharf Co. on the map, compare transit times, let the team vote on the format, and the planner books the winner.
