A board game bar is the easiest place in Boston to meet for a game night, because the games, tables and drinks are already there. Tavern of Tales, a board game cafe and bar in Mission Hill, is a 3-minute walk from Roxbury Crossing on the Orange Line. Your friends live in Brookline, Somerville and Dorchester. Somebody owns Catan, but nobody has a table that seats six.

This post lists two board game cafes and four bars built around other games. Then it covers age rules, booking a big group and which T stops work late at night. It's part of our guide to Boston.

Which board game bar in Boston fits your group?

Pick a board game cafe when the group wants to sit and play one game for hours. Pick a game bar when people want to stand, move around and switch games.

Our picks in Boston

Chosen by the Where2Meet team. Photos, ratings and addresses load live from Google Maps.

  • Tavern of Tales: Café & Bar

Book this board game cafe and bar when your group wants to sit with one long game and eat and drink while it plays. It's mid-priced, closes at 10 p.m. most nights and 9 p.m. on Sunday, and is about a 3-minute walk from Roxbury Crossing on the Orange Line.

  • Knight Moves Cafe

Plan a late night of games here on a Friday or Saturday, when this inexpensive board game cafe stays open until 2 a.m. It's good for groups but doesn't take reservations, so arrive early for a big table. Coolidge Corner on the Green Line's C branch is about a 5-minute walk.

  • VERSUS

Groups that can't agree on one game can split between arcade cabinets, pinball, consoles and a shelf of board games at this downtown bar. It opens at 5 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. on weekends. Downtown Crossing is about a 2-minute walk, and Park Street about 4.

  • SPIN Boston

Reserve a ping pong table when your group would rather move around than sit at a board. This mid-priced bar in Fort Point is closed Sunday and Monday and stays open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. South Station is about an 8-minute walk.

  • Flight Club Boston

Darts with automatic scoring suit a group where only a few people know the rules. This mid-priced Seaport bar takes bookings, suits groups and opens at noon on weekdays. The Courthouse stop on the Silver Line is about a 1-minute walk.

  • Kings Dining & Entertainment

Bowling lanes, billiards and arcade games share this restaurant, so a group can play first and eat after without moving. It's mid-priced, takes reservations, and opens at 11 a.m. on weekends for a daytime game. Courthouse station is about a 1-minute walk.

Google Maps

Hours, price levels, reservations and group details on these cards come from Google Maps as of November 2026. The games at each place come from its own website or its Google Maps listing. Walk times are Google Maps walking directions from the station each note names.

The two board game cafes are on opposite sides of the city. Tavern of Tales suits riders on the Orange Line and the Green Line's E branch, which stops at Brigham Circle about a 9-minute walk away. Knight Moves suits people in Brookline, Allston and Brighton.

Can everyone in the group get in after dark?

Not at every pick. Three of the bars turn 21+ in the evening, so check the ages in your group before you choose.

  • Flight Club is 21+ after 6 p.m. Sunday to Friday and all day Saturday, as its Boston page says.
  • VERSUS is 21+ after 7 p.m., according to its website.
  • Kings is 21+ after 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, its Seaport page says.
  • Tavern of Tales has no age limit, but its website asks that anyone under 18 come with an adult.

For a group with teenagers, book Tavern of Tales or play at Kings before 9 p.m.

How do you book a game night for a big group?

Book ahead wherever you can, and send one person early where you can't. A table for 10 is harder to find on a Friday than a table for four.

Tavern of Tales rents private game rooms online and asks parties of seven or more to email ahead. SPIN's Boston page takes table bookings for up to 10 people. Flight Club books groups of 2 to 12 online and plans events for 13 or more. Knight Moves takes no bookings, so the first person there should claim the table.

Which T stops make game night easy to reach?

Match the place to the line most of the group rides. Flight Club and Kings share one building by the Courthouse stop, a short Silver Line ride from South Station.

VERSUS is the most central pick. Downtown Crossing has the Red and Orange lines, and Park Street adds every Green Line branch. Knight Moves stays open until 2 a.m. on weekends, later than the subway runs. The MBTA's subway guide says to reach a downtown transfer station by 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday to make the last connections.

How to do it in Where2Meet

Whoever owns the most games, or whoever offered to book, opens a Where2Meet plan and posts the link in the group chat. Each player adds the T stop they'd leave from, such as Davis, Ashmont or Cleveland Circle, and compares transit times to Roxbury Crossing, Coolidge Corner and the Seaport. The group votes between a board game night and an active one, and the organizer locks in the place once the table is booked.
