Union Square works when a group is spread across downtown and both sides of Manhattan. The park runs from 14th Street to 17th Street, between Union Square West and Union Square East, and several neighborhoods meet around it. The Flatiron District is to the north, Gramercy to the east, the East Village to the southeast, Greenwich Village to the southwest and Chelsea to the west.

The station under the park has eight lines, and the L runs straight here from Williamsburg and Bushwick in Brooklyn. To meet at the station, name the plaza at the south end of the park, along 14th Street, where the subway entrances are.

Plan around the market. The Union Square Greenmarket runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., along 17th Street and Union Square West. GrowNYC says it draws up to 60,000 visitors on market days, so name an exact corner or entrance on those days.

Getting around

  • 14 St-Union Sq has the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R and W.
  • One stop west on the L is 6 Av. There you can change to the F and M under Sixth Avenue or the 1, 2 and 3 under Seventh Avenue, all at 14th Street. The MTA counts the three as one station complex.
  • PATH trains to Hoboken and Jersey City stop at 14 St, at West 14th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Late at night and on weekends, fewer trains stop here:

  • On weekends, the W doesn't run.
  • Late at night, the 5, R and W don't stop at Union Square. The 4, 6, L, N and Q still do. The N and Q run local in Manhattan at that hour.
  • At 6 Av, the M runs on weekdays only, and the 3 doesn't stop late at night.
  • See the MTA's late-night subway map and planned service changes before a late or weekend plan.
