Where to meet up in SoMa

SoMa, short for South of Market, is a large area of offices, museums, hotels and old warehouse blocks between Market Street and Mission Bay. It suits plans built around an event, like dinner before a Giants game at Oracle Park, coffee near the Moscone Center during a conference or a museum visit near Yerba Buena Gardens. It also suits colleagues from the Peninsula who arrive by Caltrain.

The north end of SoMa is a short walk from the Powell St and Montgomery St stations on Market Street. The south end is built around the Caltrain station at 4th and King, a block from the ballpark. Pick the end that is closer to most of the group.

Places that work as a meeting point:

  • the lawn of Yerba Buena Gardens, between Mission and Howard Streets at 3rd and 4th Streets
  • the Willie Mays Plaza entrance of Oracle Park, at 3rd and King Streets
  • the front of the Caltrain station at 4th and King Streets
  • the Yerba Buena/Moscone Muni station on 4th Street

Getting around

  • Caltrain from the Peninsula and San Jose ends at its San Francisco station, 700 4th Street at King. The station page lists Muni connections to the 15, 30, 45, N Judah, T Third, 91 Owl and N Owl.
  • The N Judah stops at King and 4th and at King and 2nd near the ballpark, then runs along The Embarcadero into the Market Street subway, as its route page shows.
  • The T Third stops at 4th and King, 4th and Brannan and the Yerba Buena/Moscone station, then continues to Union Square/Market Street and Chinatown, as its route page shows.
  • Powell St on BART is near Yerba Buena Gardens and the Moscone Center, as its station page says.

Some of these change at night and on weekends:

  • The T Third runs from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to midnight on weekends. After that, the 91 Owl covers 3rd and 4th Streets from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.
  • The 30 Stockton runs from the Caltrain station through downtown to the Marina, from 5 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and 6 a.m. to midnight on weekends, as its route page says.
  • BART closes around midnight every day, as its schedules page says. Muni's Owl buses, including the N Owl, run every half hour overnight.
